  2. A. The Temple of Literature is about 10 minutes away from Hoan Kiem Lake, Ha Noi. It was constructed in 1070 under Ly Thanh Tong’s dynasty, first to honour Confucius and nowadays to celebrate the doctorates and high rank scholars of Viet Nam. In 1076, King Ly Nhan Tong continued the work and built Quoc Tu Giam as the first university of Viet Nam. B. The One Pillar Pagoda is located in the western part of the city, near Ho Chi Minh’s Mausoleum, Ong Ich Khiem St., Ha Noi. Emperor Ly Thai Tong had this temple constructed in gratitude for a significant legendary event in 1049 by erecting a pillar in the middle of a lotus pond, and a temple of lotus-shape, exactly similar to what he saw in the dream. It was generally done at home, but there were workshops run by noblemen or rich men. The most important textile used to be linen, which was made from flax, one of the oldest cultivated plants. The first stages of the linen production were performed by men. The men reaped the plants and let them dry in open air for several weeks before threshing them. The dried stalks were beaten by hand until all the seeds had been removed. Then the men kept beating and combing the flax to extract fibers from them. The women then spun fibers into thread. Spinning involves twisting together the drawn out strands of fiber to form yarns, then winding the yarn onto a bobbin, or spool. The thread could be weaved into large sheets of cloth used in clothes making. Most early garments consisted simply of a rectangular pieces of cloth draped

In the past, Vietnamese people used to make traditional sticky rice cakes on Tet holiday. Several days before Tet, we used to buy all the necessary ingredients, and then gathered to make and cook the cakes. It took up to 10 or even 12 hours to make the cakes. Today, as people become busier and services more convenient, they prefer to buy the cakes instead of making them. We also used to spend the three Tet days visiting friends and relatives. Nowadays, as people live further apart, some families choose to go on holidays instead. These are two main changes in the way Vietnamese people celebrate Tet. 2.
