He was quite surprised to find that there were subtle differences between American English and British English other than the accent. The biggest difference he found was in vocabulary. He was surprised when he wanted to stand in line to get into the movie theatre, he was asked to "queue" next to the wall. He also learned that "a truck" in Britain is called "a lorry" and "an apartment" is called "a flat", "subway" means "underground" and the hood of a car is called a "bonnet". There is a slight difference in spelling, too. For example, the words "center, color, burned, dialog, realise" were spelled "centre, colour, burnt, dialogue, realize" respectively. Danny also noticed that the American say "I’m going to see a movie with my friends" while the British say "I’m going to see a movie with my mates". We also develop overall layout and production design for advertisements, brochures, magazines, corporate reports, etc. Interviewer: So it’s mostly involved images? Julia: We work with text as well. We use different types, fonts, sizes, colours, styles etc. to create special effects. We also decide how images and text will go together on a print or webpage, including how much space each will have. Interviewer: So do you have to own a computer? Julia: You can create images either on a computer or by hand. But I would say I cannot work without a computer. A graphic designer combines art with technology you know. Interviewer: Cool. How can I become a graphic designer? Julia: Graphic designers usually need a bachelor’s degree in graphic design or a related field. Candidates for graphic design positions should demonstrate their creativity and originality through a professional portfolio that features their best designs. Interviewer: And? 7. Audio script: Spring rolls is a traditional dish of Viet Nam. Ingredients to make spring rolls vary from region to region, but the basic ingredients are minced pork, bean thread noodles, eggs, carrots, bean sprouts; and some spices such as sugar, salt and pepper. You will also need rice papers, and dipping sauce. There are a number of steps that you must follow to have delicious spring rolls. First, you need to put all the ingredients into a big bowl and mix them thoroughly. Then, you lay the rice papers on a flat surface, take a small amount of the mixture and roll up the papers into long thin rolls. When the rolls are ready, you heat a pan to about 100 Celsius degrees and dip the rolls in it. You need to turn the rolls regularly to prevent them from being burnt. When they turn golden brown, take them out of the oil and drain on paper towels. Now the rolls are ready to eat. It’s best to eat them with some herbs. (Dừng) Now listen again. Write a paragraph of 100 - 120 words about the advantages that a person may have when learning English in an English speaking country. Sample writing When a person learns English in an English speaking country, he/she can have many advantages. First, he/she can learn with native speakers so they can learn the language naturally. Second, he/she can learn English in real life contexts, which is much more beneficial than someone learning English in a foreign country. Another advantage is he/she can have very natural accent or the native-like accent. This is what many people wish to have. Finally, I believe those people can also have native speakers as friends. Later on, when they come back home, they can at the same time maintain their English if keeping contact with those friends. For all the advantages I have mentioned above, I think one should go abroad to study English if they really have a chance. IV. SPEAKING
