In the first half of the 20th century, there were mainly two types of families: the extended and the nuclear. An extended family includes mother, father, children and some other relatives, living in the same house. A nuclear family is composed of just parents and children living under the same roof. As the American economy had progressed from agricultural to industrial one, people were forced to move to different parts of the country to get good jobs. These jobs were mainly in the large cities. Now, in fact, three-quarters of Americans live in urban areas which occupy 2,5% of the national total land mass. Of the 118 million in the labour force, only 3 million still work on the farm. Since moving for better jobs has often divided the extended family, the nuclear family became more popular. At present, 55% of the families in the U.S are nuclear families. But besides the two types of traditional family groupings, the family is now being expanded to include a variety of other living arrangements because of divorce. There is an increase in single-parent families, in which a father or mother lives with one or more children. Divorce has also led to blended families, which occur when previously married men and women marry again and combine the children from former marriage into a new family. There are also some couples who do not want to have children to form two-person childless families. 25. A nuclear family is one that ___. Read the following passage and mark the letter A, B, C, or D to indicate the correct answer to each of the questions from 25 to 28. Any country has good reason to want its citizens to be as healthy as possible. This led to the introduction of a health service in many countries. Britain has developed into a country in which all citizens can get most of the health treatment free; the money for this is partly from the people who are willing to offer. But there are different opinions about the Health Service. The number of patients treated every year and the cost of treatment are much
  10. greater than expected. This means that the people who work for the Health Service – doctors, nurses and other hospital workers – have much more work to do, and as a result they have little time for preventive treatment. However, the tough problem is that as many people are able to receive treatment more expensive than they can pay, sometimes people go and visit their doctors when they don’t really need to. As there are so many patients, doctors cannot spend time long enough on each patient. So some people prefer to pay for their own treatment so that their doctors can examine them more carefully. In fact, some rich people feel that they should pay more free money, which would be given to other citizens. 25. Britain is described as an example to show that ___. A. it is a very rich country in Europe B. it is a country with the Health Service C. everyone in UK enjoys free medical care D. people have to pay part of the medical fee 26. To take back some expensive medicine. C. To receive treatment free of charge. D. To keep himself even more healthy. 28. What can we infer from the last paragraph? A. There is much to improve the Health Service. B. People should not go to doctors unless necessary. C. The health Service is quite successful so far. D. The rich should be allowed to pay for the treatment. Read the following passage and mark the letter A, B, C, or D to indicate the correct answer to each of the questions from 25 to 28. Breakfast is not only the most important meal of the day, it is also the most neglected. Common reasons for not eating breakfast include lack of time, not feeling hungry, traditional dislike for breakfast, and dieting. Breakfast simply means “break the fast”. Your body spends at least 6 to 12 hours each night in fasting state. In the morning your body needs energy for the day’s work ahead. A good breakfast should provide up to 1/3 of our total calorie needs for the day. On average, we eat 400 less calories for breakfast than for dinner. If breakfast does not appeal to you in the morning, try eating a lighter dinner earlier in the evening or save half
  12. your dinner for breakfast in the morning. If you still are not hungry in the morning, start with something small like juice or toast or have a nutritious mid-morning snack later when you are hungry. So, you say you’re on a diet. Some people fear eating breakfast will make them hungrier during the day and they will eat more. It is true that eating breakfast is likely to make you feel hungry throughout the day. That’s because your body is working correctly. Although you may feel as if you are eating more all day long, in reality you are probably not. Not eating breakfast can also cause you to overeat, since a fall in blood sugar often makes you feel very hungry later. To make matters worse, since your body is in a slowed state it will not be able to burn those extra calories very efficiently. If you feed your body healthy snacks and meals throughout the day, you are less likely to become hungry and stuff yourself as soon as you begin to eat. Since breakfast is the first and most important meal of the day, choosing the right fuel is important. The best breakfast foods are fruits, juice, lean meat, and grain products such as bread, rice, noodles, and cereals. 25.
