Questions 31– 36: Read the passage and answer the questions that follow. International Women’s Day takes place every year on 8 March to celebrate the achievements of women worldwide. It started with a protest that took place in New York City in 1908 where women went out onto the streets to demand the right to vote, shorter working hours and better pay. Nowadays, it is a global event that is supported by many charities, NGOs, governments and academic institutions. In today’s world, it may appear that women have all the same opportunities as men. If you watch the news, you will see women astronauts, women prime ministers and women leaders in business. However, if you look at the statistics you will realise that there’s still a long way to go. A report by BBC a few years ago showed that in the UK, women occupied only 30.9% of the most senior positions in areas like politics and business. What is more, latest figures suggest that British women still earn on average 20% less than men. So, although progress has been made since 1908, there is still a lot to do before we see an equal number of men and women in the top jobs and receiving equal pay. To celebrate International Women’s Day, a lot of special events take place in towns and cities all over the UK. There are exhibitions, theatre shows, talks, walking tours, films, workshops and so much more. All the events are designed not only to celebrate the role of women in society but also to encourage efforts to achieve gender equality. (Adapted from International Women’s Day by British Council) Decide whether the following statements are true (T) or false (F). T F 31. Women protested in New York City in 1908 for some women’s rights. 32. The word “it” refers to a protest. 33. In reality, more men are top leaders in politics and business than women. 34. The second paragraph mainly discusses the reasons why we need to continue promoting gender equality. 35. International Women’s Day is celebrated in few places in Britain. 36. In the UK, special activities are organized for International Women’s Day to achieve gender equality. VII. WRITING Write complete sentences, using the given words and phrases. Change word forms and add more words if necessary. Do not change word orders. 37. I/not think/men/better/leaders/women/.

  5. Todd: Karen, can you talk about some of the places you've been to? Karen: Yes. First of all, I spent about three months in Australia. I suppose the most amazing place I visited was Uluru. The landscape there was just incredible. Todd: Uluru? That’s great! Karen: I've also been to South America. I spent a year in Peru, and while I was there I went to Machu Picchu. It is an ancient ruin of an old Inca town. Probably about seven hundred years old, I think. Todd: Uhuh! That's interesting. Any other places? Karen: I spent quite a lot of time in Spain, and the most interesting place there was the Alhambra in Granada. It's an amazing old town with Muslim palaces. Todd: Alhambra? Very cool. So, you've seen something in Australia, in South America, in Europe, how about Asia? Karen: Asia. I've been to Japan, Thailand, Malaysia and Singapore. Todd: And what is your favourite place in Asia? Karen: Well, probably Bangkok. Oh, no, I think I like Hokkaido the most. Task 2: There are six questions in this part. For each question, decide whether the statement is True or False. You will listen to the recording twice. I’ve learned several foreign languages as an adult. I was able to learn French to make conversations fluently in 17 days using the following techniques. I set up a routine where I did the same things every day. In the morning, I woke up and wrote out the regular and irregular verb tables for 1.5-2 hours. I managed to get through an entire pad of paper in two weeks. I still believe that writing things out by hand is the best way to memorise things. I would run for 45 to 60 minutes in the early afternoon in the French countryside listening to catchy French music. Music is a great way to learn the intonation of a language and train your facial muscles as you sing along. In the afternoon, I read “Charlie and the Chocolate Factory” in French. Reading children’s books is a great way to learn new languages. I spent at least an hour a day writing basic essays about myself which I had my French friend check for errors. Another good tip is to learn the filler words. These are the words and phrases people say all the time between sentences but have no real meanings like alors, en fait, etc. These allow you to buy time in a conversation and increase your confidence. After 17 days I left the small town and went to Paris. I met a girl in a coffee shop and we started talking. After a few minutes, she asked how long I had lived in France. When I told her I had been learning French for 17 days, she swore that I had lived in France for at least a year. Hopefully there are some useful tips you can use in your learning. Let me know and bonne chance! II. LANGUAGE Write the stress patterns of the following words.
