Nelson Mandela was born in a small village in South Africa. He grew up in a poor family, and he was the first child in the family to go to school. He became interested in politics and was forced to leave his first university for protesting. At that time, South Africa was suffering from apartheid, which meant that the black and white residents of South Africa were separated from each other. People had to carry identity cards with their race on it. Black and white people were not allowed to get married to each other. Mandela witnessed all this and decided to fight against it.
