How can scientists predict earthquakes? Earthquakes are not scattered anywhere but happen in certain areas. They happen in places where pieces of the earth’s surface meet. This pattern causes to shake the same places many times. For example, earthquakes often occur on the west-coast of North and South America, around the Mediterranean Sea, and along the Pacific coast of Asia. Another way to predict earthquakes is to look for changes in the earth’s surface, like a sudden drop of water level in the ground. Some people say animals can predict earthquakes. Before earthquakes, people have seen chickens sitting in trees, fish jumping out of the water, snakes leaving their holes and other animals acting strangely. After an earthquake happens, people can die from lack of food, water, and medical supplies. The amount of destruction caused by an earthquake depends on where it happens, what time it happens, and how strong it is. It also depends on types of building, soil conditions and population. Of the 6000 earthquakes in the earth each year, only about fifteen cause great damage and many deaths. 41. Earthquakes happen in certain areas where ___. ARCTIC ICE MAY DISAPPEAR IN A DECADE A new report on global warming predicts the frozen Artic Ocean will soon be like a normal sea in the summers. There are shocking changes happening in the polar environment and its fragile eco-systems. For millions of years, the sea around the North Pole has been frozen all year round. Recent research from the World Wildlife Fund (WWF) and the Catlin Atlantic Survey show things are changing fast. They predict that within a decade, the Artic will be larger ice-free in the summer. They base their prediction on the rate at which the sea ice is currently thinning. The lead researcher, Professor Peter Wadhams said, “The area is now more likely to become open water each summer, bringing forward the potential date when the summer sea ice will be completely gone.” An ice-free Arctic will have consequences for the whole world’s patterns. The Artic sea ice is a key part of the Earth’s climate system. Experts call it Earth’s “refrigerator”. They said that as it disappears, the world will become a lot warmer. Scientists are still unclear exactly what changes there will be to our weather. Forecasters predict an dicrease in all kinds of disasters and extreme weather events. These include massive flooding, much more dangerus hurricanes and the spread of the world’s deserts. These new findings provide an urgent call for world leaders to act. The timing of the WWF report is reminder to those attending the UN climate summit in Copenhagen in December. Rich countries will face pressure to agree to reduce their carbon emissions by 40% by 2020. 32. The word “fragile” in the passage mostly means ___. SOURCES OF ENERGY When man first appeared on earth, his greatest source of power was his own physical strength. As he grew wiser, he learned to make animals supply power for him. Then, many centuries later, he discovered that the wind and water were even better power sources than animals. Still later he found that power from stream, coal and oil was often even better than these. In the latest search for improved living, physicists – scientists who study energy and matter – have been led to the study of atom. The physicists have found that atomic energy can do such things as supplying electricity to cities, blasting our labours, running ships and submarines, and may soon provide energy for space flights. Finding ways to make the atom work for us is a new science. It just started in the 20th century. However, by working with atoms, scientists have found that these tiny storehouses of energy can both help and, unfortunately, harm mankind. 41. Which of the following is the main idea of paragraph 1?
