In spring 2008, the polar bear was placed on the endangered species list. According to the Endangered Species Act, an endangered species is an animal that is likely to face extinction in its natural habitat. Polar bears have been categorized as a "threatened" species. The ESA defines a threatened species as one that is likely to become "endangered" in the foreseeable future. The polar bear is the first animal that has been classified as endangered due primarily to global warming. Global warming is caused by carbon dioxide and other greenhouse gases that become trapped in the atmosphere. Heating homes, driving cars, and burning garbage all require fossil fuels that lead to global warming. The polar bear's habitat is more vulnerable to global warming than many other species. Polar bears live mainly on the sea ice in the Arctic. This is where they hunt for fish and build up fat reserves. When the ice melts many polar bears move to land and live off their stored fat. In the Arctic, global warming is causing the ice to melt slightly earlier and form slightly later. This results in a shorter feeding season for the polar bear. Some risk their lives to find ice. If they have to swim too far they will drown from exhaustion and hunger. The World Wildlife Fund estimates that 25% of the Arctic sea ice has disappeared in the past 30 years. 34. According to the text, the polar bear ___. A. has already become extinct B. is likely to be categorized as "threatened species" C. may become endangered in the near future D. was placed on the ESA list 35. Summers in Europe are coming ten days ahead of schedule, and could be up to 20 days early by century’s end if
- the current pace of carbon emissions continues. And it’s not just Europe. Three clearest pieces of evidence are trees leafing out sooner, birds shifting migrations and butterflies arriving early, to name just a few. They provide proof of climate change altering seasonal weather conditions across the Northern Hemisphere. Europe's first day of summer conditions has moved up 10 days over the past four decades, according to the study published in Nature Magazine. The annual switch from winter to summer weather patterns— which had occurred around April 10 at the start of the 1960s—abruptly began jumping forward during that decade. By 2010, the switch was occurring on March 30. And by 2100, the scientists project, Europe’s “summer” will arrive on March 25, approximately 20 days earlier than in pre-industrial times. The impacts are showing up in earlier budburst for grapes in France, flowering cherry trees in Switzerland, blooms of summer flowers in England and other yearly seasonal events. The accelerated summers correspond with a buildup of heat-trapping gases over the past half-century. By speeding up the winter snow melt in Eastern Europe and cutting cold air circulation across the continent, atmospheric warming has played a significant role in summer weather systems setting up early. Why are big cities so crowded? That is a frequently asked question. Over the years, cities are getting bigger and bigger. More and more people come and settle down in big cities to have a chance to fully develop their potentials and to enjoy the urban facilities. The main reason why so many people are flocking to big cities is to seek opportunities to study in good educational institutions or find better employment. Big cities are always the place where universities are located. With more intellectual elites living in the area, the quality of training and services of the educational institutions are certainly higher than in the rural areas. Big cities also offer a wide variety of jobs to meet the demands of different people with various qualifications and qualities. The other attraction of big cities comes from the better infrastructure and services that they provide. Public transportation and free lighted streets are only available in big cities. Also, hospitals, cinemas and other recreational centres are only within a walking distance for city dwellers. In short, for the two above-mentioned reasons, cities are attracting more and more people to come and realise their potentials. It is essential that the government have a sustainable development plan not only for big cities but also for rural areas as well. V. SPEAKING
