Read the following passage and mark the letter A, B, C or D to indicate the correct answer to each of the questions. The deadly coronavirus outbreak, which has pushed the Chinese medical community into overdrive, has also prompted hospitals to more quickly adopt robots as medical assistants. Telepresence bots that allow remote video communication, patient health monitoring and safe delivery of medical goods are growing in number on hospital floors in urban China. They are now acting as safe go- betweens that help curb the spread of the coronavirus.
  4. Keenon Robotics Co., a Shanghai-based company, deployed 16 robots of a model nicknamed Little Peanut to a hospital in Hangzhou after a group of Wuhan travelers to Singapore were held in quarantine. Siasun Robot and Automation Co. donated seven medical robots and 14 catering robots to the Shenyang Red Cross to help hospitals combat the virus on Wednesday, according to a media release. JD.com Inc. is testing the use of autonomous delivery robots in Wuhan, the company said. Local media have also reported robots are being used in hospitals in the city as well as in Guangzhou, Jiangxi, Chengdu, Beijing, Shanghai and Tianjin. A robot is equipped with a stethoscope and is helping doctors with their observations and allowing them to communicate with him through a large screen. A different robot is also being used to interact with quarantined people in China in order to deliver food to their bedrooms. Some are used to transport drugs around the hospital. After being loaded with medicines and given instructions about where to go, they head to their destination unaided and are able to open and close doors without any human assistance. Forbes has reported that another robot manufactured by Xenex, is minimising the spread of infection in hospital rooms where there have been suspected cases of the new coronavirus. The robot uses pulsed xenon ultraviolet-C light to wipe out pathogens, and can take as little as five minutes to clean rooms. Another robot from LA-based Dimer UVC Innovations, has developed a robot that could be used to sanitise aeroplanes, and has offered its services to three US airports to address the coronavirus outbreak. The robot, known as GermFalcon, also uses UVC light to kill viruses and bacteria and can be pushed down the aeroplane’s aisle, with wings hanging over the seats that expose all services to the light. The rapid spread of the coronavirus has left provincial hospitals straining to cope, but it has also helped accelerate the embrace of robots as a solution, turning the gadgets into medical assistants. These robots are joining China’s tech-heavy response to the coronavirus outbreak, which also includes drones and work-from- home apps. The jury remains out on how effective these coping tactics will be. China’s rapid build-out of fifth-generation wireless networking in areas around urban hospitals has also seen a rise in 5G-powered medical robots equipped with cameras that allow remote video communication and patient monitoring. These are in contrast to robots like Little Peanut, whose primary function is to make indoor deliveries. Question 43: What is the main idea of the passage? A. the result of coronavirus outbreak B. Our lifestyles, constant need for easily disposable products and the resulting waste has had a damaging impact on the environment. It is the accumulation of such waste, the kind that takes centuries to decompose, that has resulted in an increasing amount of plastic pollution around the world. Plastic pollution is associated with
  5. different types of harmful chemicals, the by-products of manufacturing and chemicals absorbed from the environment. The amount of waste we produce is increasing and we have to go way beyond recycling and replacing plastic bags in order to deal with plastic pollution. We shouldn't underestimate the scale of the challenge we are facing; one that is formidable and is affecting us all in the four comers of the world. Plastic is an incredibly useful material and is widely used because it is inexpensive, versatile, durable and resistant to moisture, but it also contains toxic substances that cannot be broken down by a natural system, therefore making it indestructible in a biodegradable sense and with long-lasting effects that cannot be reversed. A terrifyingly large amount of plastic has been produced-of which only a small amount has been recycled, some has been burn and the remaining majority has ended up in landfills or the environment. A large proportion of waste plastic ends up in the ocean. More plastic is being washed into the sea at a faster rate affecting the marine life and causing problems for the environment and us. Hundreds of millions of tons of plastic is produced globally each year and much of it ends up in the soil or freshwater. Most of this plastic slowly fragments into small pieces which eventually end up microscopic but never truly go away. These microscopics particles, or microplastic, have potentially toxic effects on ecosystems. Every piece of plastic that has ever been produced is still with us, in some shape or form. Recycling only converts existing plastic into reusable material, so we can't recycle our way out of the plastic pollution. Recycling will never stem the flow of plastic into our ecosystem; we have to get to the source of problem. It is the undeniable that the ever-increasing amount of plastic waste will have an impact on the environment, but many are not concern about the long-term issue it can create for the inhabitants of this planet. We have chosen to ignore the effect of our waste and plastic pollution on the planet as well as on our own lives for years, but it is time for radical change. This is a global issue which requires collective action. Although some believe that it should be dealt with by government, this problem can only be tackled when individuals and companies around the world work hand in hand to reduce waste. More and more companies are starting to commit to plan to reduce waste over the next couple of decades. As individuals, we also need to to work towards of a world free of plastic pollution by using reusable materials, avoiding using disposable plastic, and supporting initiatives to reduce the plastic footprint in our community. We should care and we should spread it like wildfire. Let's join the cause and make a difference! Question 43: What does the passage mainly discuss? A.Plastic consumption and its effects B.
