In 2002, several obese teenagers in the USA sued McDonald’s claiming that the company was responsible for making them fat. They argued that McDonald’s deliberately misled them into thinking that their cheeseburgers and other products were healthy and nutritious food. They claimed that the company had not warned them about the health problems that can result from eating too much salty, high-fat food and drinking too many sugary drinks: diabetes, high blood pressure and obesity. The mother of one of the children, who at the age of 15 weighed more than 180 kilograms said in her statements: “I always believed McDonald’s was healthy for my son.” Mc Donald’s rejected the claim that they were responsible for these teenagers’ health problems. “People don’t go to sleep thin and wake up obese,” said McDonald’s lawyer, Brad Lerman. The understanding of what hamburgers and French fries do has been with us for a long, long time”, he added. The judge agreed, and dismissed the case, saying: “It is not the place of the law to protect people against their own excesses.” In other words, if people choose to eat a lot of unhealthy food, they can’t blame the company that sold it to them. Other similar lawsuits against fast food companies in the USA have also failed. In 2005, the US House of Representative passed a bill which became known as the “Cheeseburger Bill”. It made it much harder for obese people to take legal action against the food industry. However, the bill has not ended the arguments about Trang 2/4 - Mã đề thi 308

For most college students, the main goal of higher education is a degree leading to a successful and satisfying career. The years at college can be fun and include life-changing experiences, offering them interesting information they may not have thought about before. Still, the most important thing for them is what those years bring them once they graduate. Jennifer Simons, director of undergraduate admissions and recruitment at Northeastern University in Boston, Massachusetts argues that there are valuable things people can learn before attending their first college class – the college application process can teach them a lot about supporting themselves and making connections with others. In the US, the process starts in the final two years of high school, when students are about 16 or 17 years old, facing questions like, ‘Where do you want to go to college?’ and ‘What will you study?’ Simons says there are so many choices available to students that these questions can seem very difficult to answer, and suggests they try to get a better understanding of themselves before making any decisions, start keeping a journal of their ideas well before they start thinking about college, ask themselves ‘Who am I?’, ‘What do I want out of life?’, and ‘What are my strengths and weaknesses?’, try to write down answers to these and other questions, take note of meaningful events that teach them something about the world or themselves. She says the answers to these general questions will likely give students a better understanding of how to answer more specific ones, a better idea about where they spend four years earning a college degree, and ideas of what to talk about in writing samples that most college applications require; students who know their own strengths will better understand how to ask people they know to write letters of recommendation for them; the more young people know about themselves, the more likely they are to make sensible decisions. “If you understand who you are,” she told VOA, “you are less likely to fall prey to somebody else’s vision for what you should be or where you should go.” Question 38.
