Juveniles have always longed to have their own language. Each generation has its own slang words, and they change faster than most adults can keep up with. That's the point of slang, according to experts who study language and communication, and according to the young people themselves. "You don't want your parents or teachers to understand everything you say," states one 15-year-old. "We need our own space, too." But nowadays it's not a matter of just a few words. There is a whole new language developing. It's happening online at a lightning speed. It is the language of IM, i.e Instant Messaging, that is also used in text messaging. For young people, it's a fun and creative way to converse. And the cool thing for them is, most adults can't understand it. "Young people have always been secretive," says one communication expert. "It used to be passing notes under the desk in class. It's a way of keeping in touch and keeping adults in the dark." Trang 1/4 - Mã đề thi 414
- There isn't only one IM language, either. Young people in every country have developed their own lingo, mainly based on sounds. For example, the Spanish question word "que?" becomes K? in IM language. In French, A+ isn't a good grade, it's the equivalent of L8R (later). In Japan, teenage girls have created an entire language called Gal Go, which is a combination of different types of Japanese characters. Even boys of their same generation find it impossible to figure out this language. The good news is that the preoccupation with IM - and with secrecy - doesn't last forever. By the time they enter college, most young people are using a simpler version of IM language, with just a few common abbreviations everyone knows. By that time, IM is just a practical way to keep in touch with friends and colleagues, not a way to keep secrets from the older generations. Question 15: The word "they" in the passage refers to ___. An increasing percentage of newcomers to the U.S workforce comes from populations that have been underserved in the past because of racial, ethnic, gender, or cultural differences. Social trends indicate that today's minority groups are more likely than those of previous generation to celebrate their own uniqueness and to demand respect and equal treatment from mainstream institutions. Organizations must manage and train this increasingly diverse workforce. Good management depends on working effectively with other people by understanding and appreciating differences in values and perspectives. Individuals who can function in diverse situations tend to develop cross-cultural communication skills and stronger leadership abilities. The primary goal of all training and development programs is to provide workers at all levels of an organization with the knowledge, skills, and abilities to perform their jobs and help the organization meet its business goals. Thus, for most generations, the decision to provide diversity training is a business rather than a moral decision. Effective diversity training targets not only individual but also the core values, traditions, structure, and culture of an organization. Diversity programs strive to identify and eliminate barriers that prevent individuals and the organization from achieving their goals. Race, ethnicity, and gender problems in the workplace are increasingly viewed by management as a significant barrier to productivity. Organizations that do not respond to diversity experience lawsuits, high turnover, low morale and productivity, loss of talent to competitors, additional recruitment and training costs, and negative publicity.
