2. 1 1. Định nghĩa câu hỏi đuôi (Tag question) Câu hỏi đuôi là kiểu câu hỏi bao gồm 2 phần, cách nhau bằng dấu phẩy: Phần trước dấu phẩy là một mệnh đề hoàn chỉnh, phần sau dấu phẩy ở dạng nghi vấn (được gọi là ) dùng để được đề cập đến ở phần trước. Ví dụ: - She is beautiful, isn’t she? [Cô ta đẹp nhỉ?] - He isn’t a doctor, is he? [Anh ta không phải là bác sĩ đấy chứ?] Phần mệnh đề trước dấu phẩy, hay còn gọi là phần mệnh đề chính, có thể ở cả 2 thể khẳng định và phủ định. 3. 2 2. Cấu trúc và cách dùng 2.1. Cấu trúc Thể của phần đuôi luôn luôn ngược lại với thể của phần mệnh đề chính. Cụ thể như sau: Trường hợp Mệnh đề chính , Phần hỏi đuôi ? (main clause) (question tag) 1 Khẳng định , Phủ định ? 2 Phủ định , Khẳng định ? LƯU Ý: Phần đuôi khi ở thể phủ định luôn để ở dạng viết tắt. Ví dụ: - She is tall, isn’t she? 6. 5 2.1.3. Các thì hoàn thành Clause, has/ have/ had (+ not) + S? - The dog hasn’t come back home yet, has it? [Con chó vẫn chưa chạy về nhà à?] - The baby has been sleeping for 4 hours, hasn’t he? 7. 6 2.1.4. Các thì tương lai Clause, will (+ not) + S? - You will come to my birthday party, won’t you? [Cậu sẽ đến dự tiệc sinh nhật của tớ phải không?] - He won’t go to the cinema with me, will he? [Anh ta sẽ không đi xem phim cùng tớ đúng không?] 2.1.5. Động từ khiếm khuyết (modal verbs) Clause, modal verb (+ not) + S? - You can climb a tree, can’t you? [Cậu có thể trèo cây không?] - They shouldn’t meet her, should they? 8. 7 3. Các trường hợp đặc biệt: Bên cạnh các trường hợp phổ biến, câu hỏi đuôi cũng có những trường hợp đặc biệt mà ta cần ghi nhớ để tránh nhầm lẫn. Sau đây là những trường hợp mà các bạn cần lưu ý. Những trường hợp đặc biệt Ví dụ 1/ Câu dùng I AM, câu hỏi đuôi là AREN’T I, I - I am a translator, aren’t I? [Tôi là biên dịch AM NOT thì câu hỏi đuôi là AM I viên mà nhỉ?] - I am not sick, am I? [Con không ốm phải không mẹ?] 2/ Câu dùng LET’S, câu hỏi đuôi là SHALL Let’s go outside, shall we? [Chúng ta ra ngoài WE? nhé?] 3/ Câu có chủ ngữ là những đại từ bất định như - Everyone speaks English, don’t they? [Mọi EVERYONE, EVERYBODY, ANYBODY, người đều nói tiếng Anh phải không?] ANYONE, thì câu hỏi đuôi sẽ có chủ ngữ là THEY. - Someone isn’t here, are they? 9. 8 Những trường hợp đặc biệt Ví dụ 4/ Câu có chủ ngữ là NOTHING, NO ONE, Nothing is special, is it? [Chẳng có gì đặc biệt NOBODY: Mặc dù câu ở mệnh đề chính ở dạng cả, phải không?] khẳng định nhưng phần hỏi đuôi sẽ ở dạng khẳng định, do các từ này vốn đã mang nghĩa phủ định. Đặc biệt, với NO ONE, NOBODY thì phần hỏi đuôi sẽ là THEY. Với NOTHING thì phần hỏi đuôi sẽ là IT. 5/ Câu chứa các trạng từ phủ định như NEVER, She hardly eats bread, does she? 10. 9 Những trường hợp đặc biệt Ví dụ 6/ Câu có cấu trúc IT SEEMS THAT thì mệnh - It seems that it is going to rain, isn’t it? [Hình đề chính sẽ là mệnh đề đứng sau THAT, phần như trời sắp mưa nhỉ?] hỏi đuôi sẽ áp dụng quy tắc như bình - It seems that you don’t want to go with me, thường. do you? [Có vẻ như anh không muốn đi cùng tôi nhỉ?] 7/ Nếu câu có chủ ngữ là một mệnh đề, một V- - What I am hearing is very interesting, isn’t it? ing, động từ dạng TO+ V thì phần hỏi đuôi sẽ [Những gì tôi đang nghe thật thú vị, phải không dùng IT là chủ ngữ nào?] - Singing helps us reduce stress, doesn’t it? 11. 10 Những trường hợp đặc biệt Ví dụ 8/ Nếu câu ở phần mệnh đề chính là câu mệnh - Do sit down, will you? [Anh sẽ ngồi chứ?] lệnh thì phần hỏi đuôi sẽ là “will you?” - Don’t make noise, will you? [Các em sẽ không làm ồn, đúng không nhỉ?] 9/ Nếu câu ở mệnh đề chính là câu điều ước She wishes she would become beautiful, may thì phần hỏi đuôi sẽ dùng MAY. she? [Cô ta ước cô ta sẽ trở nên xinh đẹp, phải không nhỉ?] 10/ Nếu chủ ngữ của mệnh đề chính là ONE One can play this song, can’t you? [Một bạn thì phần hỏi đuôi sẽ có chủ ngữ là ONE/ YOU. nào đó có thể chơi bài này, đúng không?] 11/ Nếu câu ở mệnh đề chính có chứa MUST: - I must work a lot to meet the deadline, – MUST chỉ sự cần thiết thì phần hỏi đuôi needn’t I? [Tôi phải làm việc thật nhiều để kịp dùng NEEDN’T hạn nộp, đúng không?] - They must come home late, mustn’t they? – MUST chỉ sự cấm đoán thì phần hỏi đuôi [Họ không được về nhà muộn, đúng không nhỉ?] dùng MUST (+ NOT) - He mustn’t date with her, must he? 12. 12 Những trường hợp đặc biệt Ví dụ 12/ Nếu câu ở mệnh đề chính là câu cảm thán - What a lovely kitten, isn’t it? [Con mèo kia (WHAT A/ AN , HOW , SUCH A/ AN ) thì đáng yêu quá, phải không nào?] danh từ trong câu cảm thán sẽ là chủ ngữ - chính của câu, từ đó ta sẽ biến đổi danh từ How a handsome boy, isn’t he? [Anh ta đẹp sang đại từ thích hợp để làm chủ ngữ trong trai, đúng không?] phần hỏi đuôi. 13/ Nếu có cấu trúc dạng: S + động từ tình thái - I believe the fairies exist, don’t they? [Tôi tin (feel, think, expect, ) + clause, ta có hai là thiên thần tồn tại, đúng nhỉ?] trường hợp chia câu hỏi đuôi tùy vào chủ ngữ: * TH1: I don’t think she can do it, can’t she? [Tôi không Chủ ngữ là “I” thì phần hỏi đuôi sẽ được chia nghĩ là cô ấy có thể làm được, phải không?] theo mệnh đề phụ trong câu. Khi đó, ta áp dụng các quy tắc chia câu hỏi đuôi như bình thường. Nếu chủ ngữ là danh từ/ đại từ khác “I”, thì [Họ hy vọng cô ta sẽ đến sớm hả?] phần hỏi đuôi sẽ được chia theo mệnh đề có chứa các động từ trên và áp dụng các quy tắc - My mother doesn’t think I am fine, does she? chia phần hỏi đuôi như bình thường. [Mẹ tôi không nghĩ là tôi vẫn khỏe à?] 14/ Nếu câu ở mệnh đề chính có chứa HAD - You had better go to school early, hadn’t BETTER hoặc WOULD RATHER, ta coi HAD, you? (Con nên đi học sớm, đúng không nào?) WOULD là trợ động từ và chia phần hỏi đuôi - You hadn’t better stay up late, had you? như bình thường.
