Read the following passage and mark the letter A, B, C or D on your answer sheet to indicate the correct answer to each of the questions from 27 to 32. (1,5pts) Tennis started in France nearly 1000 years ago. The game was originally played in the courtyards of royal palaces, using the walls (like squash) rather than a net. One of the Grand Slam tournaments takes place in Wimbledon every year. The Tournament or The Fortnight, as the British call the Wimbledon Tennis Championships, is very important to the English. So here you are, standing in the queue to buy your ticket to watch the matches. Everybody is waiting for their turn to get inside. Nobody is pushing. If you are English, you will have all the necessary things with you: a thermos of tea (of course), a folding chair and (surprise, surprise) an umbrella! DeThi.edu.vn
  6. Bộ 31 Đề thi tiếng Anh Lớp 12 học kì 2 (Có đáp án) - DeThi.edu.vn At last you go through the gates, and you discover the atmosphere. People are sitting under their umbrellas enjoying the British weather. The atmosphere is calm and controlled. You feel as if you are in a select private club - and, in fact, you are. The gardens are superb (well, you are in England ). Every year 3,500 geraniums are planted! What is so special about Wimbledon? Well, it is the oldest tournament in the world, and the last of the big four championships to be played on natural grass. The American, Australian and French Championships are played on cement, artificial grass and clay. All the players must dress only in white. Wimbledon is free from sponsorship, which makes it different from almost all other sporting events. This means that there are no advertising banners around the courts. The people who come to watch the matches, compared to those who watch many other international tournaments, are well disciplined. You can only sometimes hear shouts or whistles when a player prepares to serve. And if any spectator behaves badly, he or she may be asked to leave. You think that the English are very serious tennis fans. But if you want a good place, you may well find one around 4 p.m. Where has everybody gone? Look in the tents: they are having strawberries and tea. After all, tennis is just one of many traditions, and the English like to continue them all - especially tea! Africa's wild giraffe population has plunged dramatically and the world's tallest animals are in the process of a "silent extinction", a conservation group has reported. Giraffe populations have fallen by up to 40% over the last 30 years, the International Union for Conservation of Nature says in the latest edition of its "Red List" of endangered species. The gentle giants' numbers have dipped from as many as 163,000 in 1985 to just over 97,000 last year, according to the report. The steep decline was one of the headline statistics from the report, and is driven by some familiar factors including habitat loss, civil unrest and unforgetably, illegal hunting. Elsewhere, of the 742 newly recognized bird species in the list, 11% are considered threatened ‒ and 13 already listed as "extinct". "Many species are slipping away before we can even describe them," IUCN Director General Inger Andersen said in response to the report's publication. "This IUCN Red List update shows that the scale of the global extinction crisis may be even greater than we thought." Among bird species under threat is the African grey parrot, a popular pet, which is now classed as "Endangered" on the list because of "unsustainable trapping and habitat loss." Across animals, birds, insects, aquatic life and plants, the list now includes 85,604 species, of which 24,307 are threatened with extinction. The plunge in the number of wild giraffe prompted the group to move the animals from the "least concern" rating to "vulnerable", in the report. "Whilst giraffes are commonly seen on safari, in the media and in zoos, people ‒ including conservationists ‒ are unaware that these majestic animals are undergoing a silent extinction," IUCN co-Chairman Julian Fennessy, was quoted as saying. "With a decline of almost 40% in the last three decades alone, the world's tallest animal is under severepressure in some of its core ranges across East, Central and West Africa. As one of the world's most iconic animals, it is timely that we take risks for the giraffe before it is too late." Of nine subspecies of giraffe, five are declining in numbers, while three have increasing populations and one is stable. TrueFalse 39. We can forget about the threat of poaching to giraffes because it no longer exists. 40. The causes leading to the significant decline of giraffes are different from those happening to other species. 41. Over a third of newly-listed plants and animals are in danger of dying out. 42. Listen to a conversation between Linda and Tom about a company called Dreams Come True and choose the best answer. You can listen to the recording twice. Now you have thirty seconds to look through the questions. Linda: Tom, I have read an advertisement about a company called Dreams Come True which helps you do your dream job. Tom: Really, is it a job agency? Linda: No, it is a tour company. You go on holiday with it and it helps you try out some totally different jobs, your dream jobs. There are jobs from cheese maker, waiter to tour guide. Tom: Oh, I see. That sounds really interesting. Linda: The holiday is usually from one to two weeks. You will have chances to work one to one with experts who show you how to do the job. Tom: It's that right. I used to think a lot about becoming a journalist, so I will be able to work with real journalists. Linda: Of course, they will teach you how to collect information, write articles and so on. Tom: Can I try some jobs like flight attendants? It is the dream of my sister. Linda: I don't know but it may be harder as you haven't been trained to walk around and serve on the planes. You may have to work very long hours on long haul flights. It is exhausting. Tom: Yeah, you are right! Which job do you want to try? Linda: I always wanted to be a teacher. But it is a demanding job and I don't think the company can help us to try it. You cannot just jump into classes and teach children. You need to be well-trained, dedicated and, most importantly, inspirational. Maybe I should try cheese maker or baker. Tom: Yes, that sounds great. Especially when you can enjoy the fruit of your labour. Linda: Well, I love cookies and cakes. I think I will call them and book a tour to try the job. Task 2. There are three questions in this part. DeThi.edu.vn
  17. Bộ 31 Đề thi tiếng Anh Lớp 12 học kì 2 (Có đáp án) - DeThi.edu.vn Generally, AI is the science and engineering of making intelligent machines, especially intelligent computer programs. It is also related to the tasks of using computers to understand human intelligence. Sometimes but not always or even usually, it is about simulating human intelligence. After World War II, a number of people started to work on intelligent machines. The English mathematician Alan Turing may have been the first to decide that AI was best researched by programming computers rather than by building machines. By the late 1950s, there were many researchers on AI, and most of them were basing their work on programming computers. The first and most popular branch is logical AI. This program is represented by sentences of some mathematical logical language. It decides what to do by inferring that certain actions are appropriate for achieving its goals. Articles proposing this were MC159, MC187 and MC96 to name just a few. Planning programs is the second branch. They start with general facts about the world, especially facts about the effects of actions, facts about the situation and strategies for achieving the goal. Genetic programming is the third most popular branch, referring to a technique for getting programs to solve a task by mating random programs and selecting fittest in millions of generations. III. In the last 500 years, 844 species are known to have died out, and up to 16,000 others are now known to be threatened. Conservationists argue that humans have an ethical obligation to protect other species. Diversity and natural beauty are highly prized by mankind, and that biodiversity is a vital resource: we rely on ecosystems to provide food, oxygen and natural resources, recycle waste and fertilize soil for agriculture. The total value of services provided to man by nature has been estimated at $33 trillion annually. Plants and animals are also an essential source of new foods and medicines worldwide. Preserving species could help protect us from disease. Natural disasters and processes were behind the five major mass extinctions in geological history, but the current “sixth extinction” is being caused by the success of one species- humans. The six billion (and counting) people crowding the Earth, are driving out biodiversity in a variety of ways. Humans began to destroy ecosystems a major way about 10,000 years ago with the development of agriculture. But within the last 100,000 years, the hunting and burning practices of people, along with climate change, drove many large mammals to extinction. However, the most common reason for extinction is habitat loss. Ecosystems from wetlands to prairies and rain forests to coral reefs are being cleared or degraded for crops, cattle, roads and development. Even fragmenting habitats with roads or dams can make them more vulnerable. (Source: Succeed in Cambridge CAE 10 Practice Tests) Question 36: The following are true EXCEPT . The modern comic book came about in the early 1930s in the United States as a giveaway premium to promote the sales of a whole range of household products such as cereal and cleansers. The comic books, which were printed in bright colors to attract the attention of potential customers, proved so popular that some publishers decided to produce comic books that would come out on a monthly basis and would sell for a dime each. Though comic strips had been reproduced in publications prior to this time, the Famous Funnies comic book, which was started in 1934, marked the first occasion that a serialized book of comics was attempted. Early comic books reprinted already existing comic strips and comics based on known characters; however, publishers soon began introducing original characters developed specially for comic books. Superman was introduced in Action Comics in 1938, and Batman was introduced a year later. The tremendous success of these superhero comic books led to the development of numerous comic books on a variety of topics, though superhero comic books predominated. Astonishingly, by 1945 approximately 160 different comic books were being published in the United States each month, and 90 percent of U.S children were said to read comic books on a regular basis. Read the following passage carefully, then choose the best answer. There is very little documentation about the origins of water polo. It is known, however, that the sport originated in the rivers and lakes of mid-19th century England as an aquatic version of rugby. Early games used an inflated rubber ball that came from India known as a "pulu" (the single Indian word for all "balls"). Pronounced "polo" by the English, both the game and the ball became known as "water polo." To attract more spectators to swimming exhibitions, the London Swimming Association designed a set of water polo rules for indoor swimming pools in 1870. At first, players scored by planting the ball on the end of the pool with both hands. A favorite trick of the players was to place the five-to-nine inch rubber ball inside their swimming suit and dive under the murky water, they would then appear again as close to the goal as possible. The introduction of the rules by Scottish players changed the nature of water polo. It became a game that emphasized swimming, speed and passing. Scottish rules moved from a rugby variant to a soccer style of play. Goals became a cage of 10 x 3 feet and a goal could be scored by being thrown. Players could only be tackled when they "held" the ball and the ball could no longer be taken under water. The small rubber ball was replaced by a leather soccer ball. If the player came up too near the goal, he was promptly jumped on by the goalie, who was permitted to stand on the pool deck. Games were often nothing more than gang fights in the water as players ignored the ball, preferring underwater wrestling matches that usually ended with one man floating to the surface unconscious. Water polo was first played in the USA in 1888. The game featured the old rugby style of play which resembled American football in the water. "American style" water polo became very popular and by the late 1890's was played in such venues as Madison Square Garden and Boston's Mechanics Hall, attracting 14,000 spectators to national championship games. We tend to read only books in our professional or business field, or only inspirational books, or only our favorite newspapers every morning, or only one magazine for which we have developed a preference. And the trouble starts here. You should neither read only for entertainment nor only for information but you should also read for intellectual growth, for mental stimulation, for enriching your background of knowledge, for wisdom, and for broader outlook and mature understanding. What kind of books should you read to continue your intellectual growth, to gain a background for opinion and for judgment? The answer is simple one: Read books in fields you have little or no acquaintance with, books that will open for you new horizons of learning, books that will help you explore new areas of knowledge and experience, books that will make the world and people more understandable to you. Sadly, more and more people today are giving up the printed word in favor of being entertained and informed by watching TV, a popular entertainment, device present at most homes. More and more children are being subjected to TV programming, perhaps as a babysitter. More than two hours of TV time per day are now a part of children development, generating physiological and mental problems that are of growing concern among experts. The Singapore Science Centre is located on a six-hectare site in Jurong. At the centre, we can discover the wonders of science and technology in a fun way. Clap your hands and colorful bulbs will light up. Start a wheel spinning and it will set off a fan churning. It is a place to answer our curiosity and capture our imagination. The centre features over four hundred exhibits covering topics like solar radiation, communication, electronics, mathematics, nuclear energy and evolution. It aims to arouse interest in science and technology among us and the general public. The centre is the first science one to be established in South East Asia. It was opened in 1977 and it now receives an average of one thousand, two hundred visitors a day. The exhibits can be found in four exhibition galleries. They are the Lobby, Physical Sciences, Life Sciences and Aviation. These exhibits are renewed annually so as to encourage visitors to make return visits to the centre. Instead of the usual “Hands off” notices found in exhibition halls, visitors are invited to touch and feel the exhibits, push the buttons, turn the cranks or pedals. This is an interesting way to learn science even if you hate the subject. A Discovery Centre was built for children between the ages of three and twelve. 41. Bộ 31 Đề thi tiếng Anh Lớp 12 học kì 2 (Có đáp án) - DeThi.edu.vn whose mothers have received primary education is half that of children whose mothers are illiterate. In the poorest countries of the world, 50% of girls do not attend secondary school. Yet, research shows that every extra year of school for girls increases their lifetime income by 15%. Improving female education, and thus the earning potential of women, improves the standard of living for their own children, as women invest more of their income in their families than men do. Yet, many barriers to education for girls remain. In some African countries, such as Burkina Faso, girls are unlikely to attend school for such basic reasons as a lack of private latrine facilities for girls. Higher attendance rates of high schools and university education among women, particularly in developing countries, have helped them make inroads to professional careers with better-paying salaries and wages. Education increases a woman's (and her partner and the family's) level of health and health awareness. Furthering women's levels of education and advanced training also tends to lead to later ages of initiation of sexual activity and first intercourse, later age at first marriage, and later age at first childbirth, as well as an increased likelihood to remain single, have no children, or have no formal marriage and alternatively, have increasing levels of long-term partnerships.
